She swallowed each piece cut out from the cake-tins
Each piece of the carrot cake, meant to be sweet,
Tasted bitter -- like the harsh words she heard.
She ate though she knew she ought not
For she had thrown out her doctors' advice,
But kept the cake that she felt no one wanted.
In her mind it was her that no one wanted,
For they all ate the other cake that was baked,
So sweet -- not like the harsh words she heard.
Can I pull her back from sinking further
Into the depths of her own mind -- awaiting
A disappointing future she had not expected?
